Quebec and Maritimes

March 1, 2019 - Hello Members,

With great sadness, I wish to inform you that one of USW Local 1944’s staff members, Kate Wood, passed away Saturday, February 23.

February 26, 2019 - As we celebrate Pink Shirt Day on Wednesday, February 27th, 2019, Local 1944 reaffirms its commitment to build bullying-free workplaces.

February 14, 2019 - Several of you have shared your displeasure regarding the format of your regular unit meetings. Some points raised were with respect to the structure of the meetings themselves, the frequency or lack thereof, the desire to be able to participate by other means if you’re not physically able to attend, and so on.

In Canada, the legislation from some jurisdictions provide a range of acceptable temperatures for specific circumstances. In other cases, occupational health and safety jurisdictions use the Threshold Limit Values® for cold stress as published by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH). Some Canadian jurisdictions have adopted these TLVs as occupational exposure limits and others use them as guidelines.

February 1, 2019 - Black History Month gives us the opportunity to recognize the contributions of the black community throughout the country.

January 30, 2019 - Today, Local 1944 Executive Board members were sworn-in at the Leo W. Gerard Union Centre in Mississauga, Ontario. Congratulations are extended to the new Executive Board.

January 4, 2019 - The Administrators of USW Local 1944 have accepted the Local Union Election Tellers Report for the elections of the two Regional Executive Officers for Alberta.

December 21, 2018 - 2018 has been an eventful year for USW Local 1944. Highlights have included the successful ratification of a progressive collective agreement for our Unit 60 members at Shaw in Vancouver and Surrey, and the many opportunities our members have had to attend various USW District and International Conferences, labour schools and Shop Steward training.

December 19, 2018 - We know that our members at Telus that worked in Concierge positions have been patiently waiting to hear the outcome of grievances filed in 2013 and 2014.

December 7, 2018 - The deadline to apply to the new District 6 Mentorship Program is Monday, December 31, 2018. This program is meant to increase exchanges between Steelworkers, by pairing up Leaners with Mentors – both are volunteer roles. The pair is expected to commit for 12 months and to hold a monthly conversation about issues arising from the Learner’s local.

A Learner is a Steelworker looking to expand their skill set. The learner will be picking the topics which they feel they need a more experienced perspective on.
