April 26, 2019 - April 28 is the National Day of Mourning. On this day, we dedicate a moment to honour the workers killed, injured or made ill by their job. As some Canadians’ governments are currently rolling back workers’ protections, the National Day of Mourning is a reminder that many of these occupational accidents are the direct consequence of employers putting profit-before-people.

April 12, 2019 - Check out the latest release of our 1944@Work magazine.

The April 2019 issue features:

March 27, 2019 - I’m very pleased to announce a change to the Local’s process of scheduling Unit Meetings, and to the content of those meetings. As previously announced in my President’s Message from February 14, 2019, many of you have expressed a desire to have less structured meetings, meetings that are much more about discussion, learning and plan making rather than moving through the regular order of business, minutes, reports, etc.

March 21, 2019 - On March 21, one week after the horrific terrorist attack at mosques in New Zealand, we mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

This attack, as well as countless others in our country and across the globe, is a vivid reminder of the urgency of addressing racial discrimination in our workplaces and communities. The increase in hate crimes is the direct result of political tactics that instill fear and misinformation, serving the interests of the 1%.

March 8, 2019 - USW Local 1944 is proud to release its 1944@Work magazine. We hope that you will enjoy this new format, easier to read and with a new focus on what really matters for our members.

March 8, 2019 - On International Women’s Day, organizations and governments around the globe denounce gender inequalities and typically make promises to challenge the gender pay gap. What if a few years from now, on International Women’s Day, we were finally celebrating gender parity, respect and inclusivity?

March 1, 2019 - This week, USW Local 1944 Table Officers and Local Union Representatives were invited to participate in a specialized training at the United Steelworkers Canadian National Office (USW CNO).

March 1, 2019 - Hello Members,

With great sadness, I wish to inform you that one of USW Local 1944’s staff members, Kate Wood, passed away Saturday, February 23.

February 26, 2019 - As we celebrate Pink Shirt Day on Wednesday, February 27th, 2019, Local 1944 reaffirms its commitment to build bullying-free workplaces.

February 14, 2019 - Several of you have shared your displeasure regarding the format of your regular unit meetings. Some points raised were with respect to the structure of the meetings themselves, the frequency or lack thereof, the desire to be able to participate by other means if you’re not physically able to attend, and so on.
