April 23, 2020 - For the attention of our members at Shaw:

Recently you will have heard in the news that last quarter your employer, Shaw, posted their profit numbers at approximately $155 MILLION. This would normally be reason to celebrate, but unfortunately, Shaw has decided to take this opportunity to downsize their workforce, unfortunately including some of our members of Unit 60.

April 17, 2020 - USW Local 1944 is committed to assisting members with tuition relief through 7 scholarship opportunities to children of union members graduating from high school. Every year, the Local Union offers 3 educational scholarships of $750 and 4 scholarships of $1,000 for any post-secondary public institution.

Requirements

The following requirements must be met:

April 15, 2020 - Last week, Shaw Cablesystems notified the Union that they intended to downsize their workforce under our Vancouver, Surrey and Abbotsford collective agreements. They proposed to do this through a voluntary exit package.

March 31, 2020 - Check out the March 2020 issue of your magazine.

While members of Unit 60 Abbotsford are getting ready for the beginning of the round of bargaining with Shaw, the fight goes on for IBEW 213 Ledcor workers. This issue also features a word from our National Acting President, the election of our Office Coordinator to MoveUp’s Executive Board, useful resources on COVID-19, and Seniority lists for USW Local 1944 members.

March 30, 2020 - It is YOU as Telecommunications Workers who are keeping Canada running right now. Many Canadians are working from home and staying safe, countless Canadians are able to call health lines to get their medical advice, and other Canadians are kept aware of important developments by TV and internet. Millions of children are able to learn via e-learning when they are kept home from school, numerous businesses and governments are able to maintain essential services to keep the provinces and country safe from chaos.
March 16, 2020 - As you are all aware, the global COVID-19 situation is becoming more severe every day and has begun affecting each of your workplaces and personal lives. The same is true for myself, every member of Local 1944’s leadership, and all of our staff. It’s during times like these that it’s most necessary for people to support one another, and especially our most at-risk, which is what a Union is all about.

March 11, 2020 - Following the three previous Share Hope campaigns that were organized in December 2017, August 2018 and November 2018, Unit 51 in Burnaby is organizing another Share Hope action this month.

March 5, 2020 - On Thursday, February 20, 2020, we heard Darren Entwistle, Chief Executive Officer of Telus, speak at the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) hearings against legislation enhancing Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs). We, the workers at Telus, understand his concern regarding the introduction of MVNOs that would be allowed to lease capacity from existing facilities-based carriers and then sell the service to retail customers.

March 5, 2020 - It is with great regret and sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Local 1944 member Travis Storozynsky of Williams Lake, British Columbia, who lost his life on February 20th in a motor vehicle accident during his shift at Telus.

Travis was a big part of his work team which considers itself to be like a family. Travis leaves behind his fiancé (Andrea) and many other friends and family.

Travis was a Brother of ours and he will never be forgotten.

March 2, 2020 - On Sunday, February 23, 2020, Unit 63 members from the Stratcom certification attended a ratification meeting in Vancouver, BC.

Results of the ratification vote for the renewal USW Local 1944 Stratcom Collective Agreement have been tabulated and the agreement has been ratified.  It will be signed by the Local Union and the Company and will be effective, upon signing, from December 1, 2019 to November 30, 2022.
