Alberta

August 19, 2020 - As summer starts to think about winding down, we reflect on what kind of summer, and in fact, what kind of year it has been up until now, and what lays ahead for the rest of 2020 and beyond. While COVID-19 has certainly thrown a massive-sized wrench into our daily lives and the lives of our families, friends and communities and continues to do so, we stand united in a common purpose; the health and wellbeing of each other.
August 11, 2020 - Is the volume of work expected in your day so much that you cannot get through all the work assigned? Are your job metrics unrealistic? To keep up with expectations, are you reading work emails and completing work off the clock? Are you working before your shift start to get a jump on things in hopes of staying off the radar?
August 6, 2020 - As announced earlier this month, and to honour all Telecom Workers that allow Canadians to work from home, Local 1944 is organizing a contest. The challenge is simple: Display our “Thanks To All Telecom Workers” poster in the most creative and effective way. You could win one of three $500 Visa gift cards!

As the Executive Board met by Zoom videoconference in mid-July, members addressed their thanks to long-time activist and departing Regional Executive Officer Alberta David Skrober for his invaluable commitment to the Local Union.

July 28, 2020 - Members of the Women of Steel Committee have been working on a series of four Special Publications addressing common mental health issues, including burnout. They will be releasing one publication each month. All four publications are inter-linked and ready now if you wish to read ahead for further information.

July 16, 2020 - I’d like to advise all Local members that David Skrober has resigned, effective today, from his position of Regional Executive Officer Alberta on the Local 1944 Executive Board. The Board thanks Brother Skrober for his dedicated and principled contributions since being installed to the office in January 2019.

July 9, 2020 - The Local Union received a favourable arbitration award on June 29, 2020, reinstating a terminated member, in a case led by one of our Local Union Representatives, Tamara Marshall. The Local’s past practice has been that lawyers represented union members at arbitrations, but Local 1944’s Local Union Representatives have now been trained so that they can represent our members instead.

July 2, 2020 - On Friday, the Union was notified by Telus that a member had dared to post the Local’s poster that reads, “Thanks to all Telecom Workers that allow Canadians to work from home” on a door within a Central Office in Alberta, and that management had taken the poster down as it wasn’t on a Union Board.
