Today the USW Canadian National Office launched a campaign for the public and members alike to send letters to Parliament calling for political leaders to urge Telus back to the bargaining table.
As mentioned in Bargaining Update #33, Local 1944 is ramping up our activities and campaigns across the country throughout February seeking to conclude a fair Agreement for you, and so we decided to lead off with a video recapping how far we’ve come as a membership in the past year. Take a look:
Your Union is stronger and more united than it has been in 17 years thanks to your support and solidarity, therefore we have a wide array of options to escalate pressure on the employer. It’s up to the Company to determine how far we need to go to make them offer you a fair deal.

We have taken down our wage calculator because some technical issues with it have come to light. However, we would like to address some confusion regarding the Company’s offer. While they are advertising 5.5% in the first year of the contract and a $10,000 lump sum, this is not entirely accurate. The table below illustrates the Company’s monetary proposal:

By now, you may have received a proposed collective agreement from Telus, which they believe that you will settle for and accept this substandard offer. We believe this offer should be firmly rejected as Telus can do better.

You will have an opportunity to vote on this abhorrent offer. As you know, we are recommending a NO and will explain our rationale in detail and answer all of your questions during these upcoming sessions.

It is with great regret that your Bargaining Committee is advising you of Telus’ unilateral decision to halt bargaining by walking away from the table. For the past 14 months, your Bargaining Committee has shown up to the table ready to engage in good faith bargaining with Telus. From day one, our message has been clear: we want a fair deal. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of Management.
