Alberta

As we celebrate the hundredth anniversary of the 1919 Winnipeg General Strike, there are several lessons to be learned from this historic moment of Canada’s labour movement. Much of what workers were fighting for 100 years ago we need to keep fighting for today. With newly elected Conservative governments in Ontario and Alberta, we mustn’t take our rights for granted. Understanding how events unfolded in 1919 can prepare us for securing a better future.

May 17, 2019 - Check out the latest release of our 1944@Work magazine.

The May 2019 issue features articles on the Alberta Federation of Labour Convention 2019, Telus DHT Conversion Canvass, Experiences from the USW National Policy Conference, reports from our workplaces, members’ involvement in our Local and in the labour movement, and more!

May 9, 2019 - Our Local Union is undergoing progressive changes aimed at reinvigorating, prioritizing, and engaging our membership. For quite some time, many of you have been asking for more opportunities to be mentored or further develop your skills as activists. Ensuring our future leaders receive the education they need is a top priority for our Local’s Officers.

May 1, 2019 - May is Asian Heritage Month in Canada. In 2019, there is still tremendous progress to be made to achieve diversity and inclusivity in our workplaces. To this day, Asian communities living in Canada continue to face individual and institutional racism, Islamophobia and ongoing socioeconomic struggles.

April 26, 2019 - April 28 is the National Day of Mourning. On this day, we dedicate a moment to honour the workers killed, injured or made ill by their job. As some Canadians’ governments are currently rolling back workers’ protections, the National Day of Mourning is a reminder that many of these occupational accidents are the direct consequence of employers putting profit-before-people.

April 12, 2019 - Check out the latest release of our 1944@Work magazine.

The April 2019 issue features:

Tuesday, April 9, 2019 - The Advance poll days for the 2019 Provincial General Election in Alberta start today, April 9, 2019, and will continue until Saturday, April 13, 2019, inclusive, 9:00 am to 8:00 pm daily.

March 27, 2019 - I’m very pleased to announce a change to the Local’s process of scheduling Unit Meetings, and to the content of those meetings. As previously announced in my President’s Message from February 14, 2019, many of you have expressed a desire to have less structured meetings, meetings that are much more about discussion, learning and plan making rather than moving through the regular order of business, minutes, reports, etc.

March 22, 2019 - Local 1944 is very proud to announce that three of the NDP candidates for the upcoming 2019 Provincial General Election in Alberta are USW Local 1944 members.

“Not only is Rachel Notley a Steelworker, but Shaye Anderson, Steve Durrell and Kyle Johnston are all brothers from Local 1944 running for spots as ABNDP candidates,” said Joe Benn, Local Union Representative for Alberta who is actively involved in political action. “We wish them success as we strive for four more years for Rachel.”

March 21, 2019 - On March 21, one week after the horrific terrorist attack at mosques in New Zealand, we mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

This attack, as well as countless others in our country and across the globe, is a vivid reminder of the urgency of addressing racial discrimination in our workplaces and communities. The increase in hate crimes is the direct result of political tactics that instill fear and misinformation, serving the interests of the 1%.
