Nominate a USW Local 1944 member for the Jefferson Awards

January 8, 2018 - "Through celebration, we inspire action." The Jefferson Awards Foundation was founded in 1972 by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Senator Robert Taft Jr., and Sam Beard. It is now considered as the most prestigious organization dedicated to celebrating public service and ordinary citizens who do extraordinary things without expectation of recognition.

We are a union that works in our communities

Our Local is composed of activists who help their communities and volunteer their time to various causes. For many of our members, lending a helping hand in their neighborhoods is part of being a member of the Local.

In 2016, our brother Ron Palmer received a Jefferson Award for his work with the government of Alberta to make improvements in accessibility and the licensing of service dogs and in 2017, our sister Nancy McCurrach received the award for her volunteering in many community organizations, among which the Tri-Cities Refugee Welcome Wagon in Port Coquitlam.

If you are an activist, or if you know an activist, you can nominate yourself or others for a Jefferson Award.

Why nominating a TWU, USW National Local 1944 member for the Jefferson Awards?

"USW Local 1944 is dedicated to creating unity and strength for workers," said Lee Riggs, National President of USW Local 1944. "We wish to celebrate members who donate their time, money or goodwill to assist others."

Each regional winner of the Jefferson Award is awarded with a $500 US donation to go towards their cause, and the national winner is awarded a prize of $1,000 US.

This recognition will allow the winner to impact more lives and to create better tomorrows!

Guidelines for USW Nominees

  • Nominee must be a United Steelworker member or employee. (An unlimited number of people may be nominated from each district).
  • Public service must be significant and documentable.
  • No financial incentive or other benefits may be directly derived by the member in return for their service. 
  • You may self-nominate.
  • Submit applications by February 18, 2018.
