September 29, 2017 - On Sunday, October 1, 2017, we celebrate the older generations, the men and women who paved the way for the labour movement as we know it.
Our retirees fought for their rights as workers and contributed to make our union strong. USW Local 1944 pays tribute to all our retired members: each one of them, through their labour activism or the simple fact of being unionized, has taken part in the creation of the benefits enjoyed today.
“Paying tribute is not enough, now is time to go further,” says Lee Riggs, President of USW Local 1944. “We need to step into the future by tapping the talents of the older persons, and encourage our retirees to remain active members of our society.”
Make a difference by joining the Steelworkers Organization of Active Retirees (SOAR)
Retirement is not the end to union involvement. SOAR is a community of Steelworkers open to all USW retirees who want to work for a positive social change. By joining SOAR, you will be involved in the financial, legislative or public health care decisions that affect you and your family’s rights.
For more information about SOAR and how to become a member, visit: www.usw.ca/act/activism/soar.
Happy International Day of Older Persons to all our retired members!
In Solidarity,
United Steelworkers Local 1944
