2017 Local Annual Delegated Meeting - Day 2

May 31, 2017 - Our Local Annual Delegated Meeting (LADM) continued yesterday in Edmonton.

The day started with a report from the Secretary-Treasurer.

Delegates then heard speeches from the nominees for Vice-President British Columbia and Secretary-Treasurer.

District 3 Director Steve Hunt then addressed delegates. Brother Hunt spoke about how everything we do as trade unionists is predicated on politicians making the right decisions. He spoke about working with the Alberta NDP government, the new BC NDP and BC Green agreement to form a majority government, drug testing in the workplace, various educational opportunities, and building solidarity within the union.

“There are two words - process and progress. You have to get to progress and not get stuck in process. When you work together, you are stronger together. You need to identify the issues and fix it. Don’t get stuck on process as it gets in the way of progress,” stated Brother Hunt. “When you walk out the door, walk out stronger together. Put your mind to how you are going to change and adapt. The sooner you do this, the better off you will be. Solidarity works as we are stronger together.”

The report from the National Executive Council commenced following the address from Brother Hunt.

Our guest speaker, Gil McGowan, President of the Alberta Federation of Labour (AFL), also addressed delegates. Brother McGowan delivered a speech highlighting the successful work that the federation has been doing in Alberta. He spoke about the Alberta recession, Bill 17 - the Fair and Family-friendly Workplaces Act, and the need to support progressive governments.

“If you want the government that you helped to succeed, then you have to walk with them and provide ideas for good policies. Give them ideas and keep them on the right path,” stated Brother McGowan. “Don’t take your foot off the gas. Be present, come with ideas and don’t be afraid to push a bit.”

The National Executive Council report continued in the afternoon. The report included a special presentation from Dr. Charl Els, a psychiatrist, addiction specialist and medical review officer.

Delegates then heard from the finance committee during which the committee presented a balanced budget for further discussion and review.

Following a brief Good of the Order, the LADM adjourned for the day.
