March 22, 2021 - Several changes to the Local’s team of Local Union Representatives are taking effect this month.

As part of the United Steelworkers’ tradition of hiring Staff Representatives directly from amongst its members and Local Unions’ staff, your Local Union Representative for Quebec Hans-Woosly Balan has accepted a position as a District 5 USW Staff Representative. He will be working for District 5 reporting to Director Dominique Lemieux. His last day as a Local Union Representative for Local 1944 will be March 26th.

March 16, 2021 - Once again, our latest set of Shop Steward classes filled up within a couple days, and so Local 1944 is excited to announce three new classes in May and June. It’s obvious that members are looking for a way to #RiseUp against the stresses and injustices of our workplaces, and this is inspiring to see.

Please note that you can only sign up for one class, and once you have signed up for one class, you can only change this for another class with the approval of the Union.

March 12, 2021 - If you have been trained to take appointments for the vaccination clinics and are inside the bargaining unit, you DO NOT have to do unpaid work, including system start-up, prior to the start of your shift. No discipline will be forthcoming if you refuse.

March 9, 2021 - On March 5th, 2021, a tentative agreement with Shaw was reached by our Abbotsford bargaining team, who endorsed the agreement and strongly recommended that members support its ratification.

March 8, 2021 - Today is International Women’s Day. Women have been paying a heavy price since the beginning of the pandemic-induced recession; they have suffered from increased gender inequality in the labour force and increased domestic violence. Many women workers have experienced burnout and mental health issues in the past year, with so many competing stresses to deal with.

March 5, 2021 - Congratulations Abbotsford! We appreciate the solidarity that you have shown your bargaining committee. It is what has kept us going, and that made the difference at the bargaining table. Your bargaining team has reached a tentative agreement. We are pleased to bring it to the membership with our unanimous endorsement. We will be presenting the details of this offer and holding a ratification vote this Monday, March 8, 2021, at 4:30 pm.

March 4, 2021 - The Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) will be holding its 3-day Convention virtually, on June 16-18, 2021, using an interactive and secure online platform. Delegates will be able to elect leadership through secure voting, discuss policy through live moderated debate, and determine the actions that will set the agenda for Canada’s labour movement.

March 2, 2021 - The bargaining committee is coming to Abbotsford next Monday, March 8, 2021, immediately at the end of the business day to inform you and to demonstrate to you, the members, that we are working hard for you. Your input and participation is at the forefront of this process. This process doesn’t work without you, we are your bargaining team and are your voice at the table. It is imperative that we are in lockstep as we navigate the road ahead.

February 16, 2021 - Given the success and the record time with which the February Virtual Shop Steward Level 1 classes filled up, Local 1944 is excited to announce 3 new classes in April and May. We are very pleased with the excitement members have shown for the training, and we thank all of those who already have stepped up to get involved in their Local Union.

Please note that you can only sign up for one class, and once you have signed up for one class, you can only change this for another class with the approval of the Union.
