Advance polls open tomorrow, May 26, for Ontario Elections 2018

May 25, 2018 - Ontario’s Election day is June 7, 2018. This is a crucial election and a chance to elect a labour-friendly government who will represent the voices of Ontarians. For this reason, it is imperative that we all make our voices heard by going out and voting for Andrea Horwath and the Ontario NDP.

Andrea Horwath and the Ontario NDP are fighting for a fairer, more just, and more equal Ontario, with plans to improve Pharmacare, education, and the cost of living. You can take action today on the issues that matter to Ontario by adding your name to create progressive change in your province.

“Steelworkers know that our union is a strong supporter of the NDP,” stated USW District 6 Director Marty Warren, during a Telephone Town Hall with Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath, on April 30, 2018. “This election is so important. As working people, sometimes we feel that governments are not listening to us. In our union, we work very hard to talk to our members about politics, to make the connections between the decisions that are made at Queen’s Park, and how the laws and policies decided there can affect us in our daily lives and our working lives.”

You can listen to the Telephone Town Hall with Marty Warren and Andrea Horwath online to learn more about the Ontario NDP’s plan for a better Ontario.

USW Local 1944 encourages our members to show support to our Brothers and Sister Steelworkers who are running as Ontario NDP candidates: Gilles Bisson (Timmins), Guy Bourgouin (Mushkegowuk-James Bay), Michael Mantha (Algoma-Manitoulin), Paul Miller (Hamilton East-Stoney Creek), Jana Papuckoski (Northumberland-Peterborough South), and Jamie West (Sudbury).

Our members should be aware that new legislation has changed some of the rules governing union activities and communications during provincial elections. Please read the Guide to Steelworkers’ Involvement in the Ontario 2018 Election to learn how you can get politically active.

How to Vote

First of all, you need to be registered on the Voters List in order to be able to vote. There are several ways you can vote in the Ontario Elections:

- In person before election day at a returning office, from May 10 until June 6, at 6:00 pm (Eastern Time);
In person before election day at an advance voting location, from May 26 to May 30;
In person on election day, on June 7;
By special ballot, either in person, by mail, or by home visit.

For more information about the voting process, please visit www.elections.on.ca.

It’s time for change in Ontario. We know that Ontarians deserve better than Kathleen Wynne or Doug Ford, who will only cater to their wealthy donors, eroding our public services, childcare, and raising our living expenses.

By voting for Andrea Horwath and the Ontario NDP, as endorsed by the USW and the Ontario Federation of Labour, you would be taking part in creating a better Ontario.

In Solidarity,

USW Local 1944
