Announcement from the Administrator for August 9, 2019 August 9, 2019 - I am pleased to announce that we have established a Grievance Committee for Local 1944. The creation of this new Committee is a key component of our overall Strategic Plan that was developed by President Isabelle Miller with the assistance of District 3 Director, Steve Hunt and myself.

 July 30, 2019 - Pride events are taking place until September. Our Local recognizes and supports the struggles of our LGBTQ members. All individuals should be treated as being equally deserving of respect, dignity and freedom. We must continue to change mentalities and build safe work environments for all of our members. Pride events are the opportunity to support human rights for all.

July 15, 2019 - There are only a few days left to submit your applications to Local 1944 scholarships.

June 12, 2019 - Yesterday, Tuesday, June 11, 2019, Unit 63 members from the Stericycle certification attended two ratification meetings in Richmond, BC.

Results of the ratification vote for the proposed USW Local 1944-Stericycle Collective Agreement have been tabulated and the agreement has been ratified. It will be signed by the Local Union and the Company and will be effective, upon signing, from December 21, 2018 to December 31, 2020.

June 11, 2019 - Every year, USW Local 1944 offers three educational scholarships of $750 and four scholarships of $1,000 for any post-secondary institution, to children of union members graduating from high school.

June 6, 2019 - As we are all aware, Alberta is experiencing wildfires along with Northern Ontario.

Current wildfires out of control in Alberta are:

  • High Level: 275,000 ha and 24,000 ha
  • Slave Lake region: 239,000 ha
  • Peace River Region: 56,000 ha

(For comparison, the 2016 Fort McMurray fire was 84,984 ha.)

As we celebrate the hundredth anniversary of the 1919 Winnipeg General Strike, there are several lessons to be learned from this historic moment of Canada’s labour movement. Much of what workers were fighting for 100 years ago we need to keep fighting for today. With newly elected Conservative governments in Ontario and Alberta, we mustn’t take our rights for granted. Understanding how events unfolded in 1919 can prepare us for securing a better future.

May 16, 2019 - The Ontario Coalition for Better Child Care (OCBCC) is calling a Day of Action this Wednesday for leafleting and petition collection about the province’s child care cuts at child care centres all across Ontario.

Wednesday, May 22nd, especially at drop-off time 7:45am-9:00am.
