Weekly Update: September 13 - September 20

Telus Payroll Grievance:

The Union has achieved an important step forward in our ongoing payroll grievance for TELUS members.

For some time, the Union and TELUS have been working through significant disagreements about the information TELUS would be required to provide to the Union. Those disagreements ultimately required a formal arbitration hearing to determine the scope of the disclosure the Union would receive.

The resulting award requires TELUS to provide various types of information that are arguably relevant to the file. This will allow the Union to examine not only individual payroll errors, but also how those errors arose, how they were identified, and how TELUS responded to them.

Among other things, TELUS will be required to provide information concerning:

• underpayments and overpayments, including when errors were identified and corrected;
• instances where underpayments were not immediately corrected or continued into subsequent pay periods;
• cash advances, interim payments, and the recovery of overpayments;
• the design and implementation of the payroll system and the testing conducted before it went live; and
• identified payroll defects and TELUS's internal monitoring of payroll accuracy.

This information should provide a strong foundation as we approach the merits component of the arbitration. The Union will carefully review the disclosure once it is received and will continue to pursue the grievance on behalf of affected members.

The Union will keep members informed as the arbitration progresses.
