Women of Steel from USW Local 1944 to share hope on November 20th

November 8, 2018 - Following the two previous campaigns that were organized in December 2017 and August 2018, Women of Steel from USW Local 1944 are organizing another day of action later this month.

“This November, our Share Hope campaign will benefit Ishtar Women’s Transitional Housing,” said Julie Charbonneau, from Unit 51 and 2018 Jefferson Award recipient for District 3. “This day of action aims at recognizing the National Day of Remembrance and Action of Violence Against Women on December 6.”

Join our Women of Steel for a pub night on November 20, 2018, at Woody's Pub in Coquitlam.

Tickets for the pub night can be purchased for the price of $25, including a burger and a drink (please note that only 100 tickets are available). This will be a fun evening with Door Prizes, Silent Auction and 50/50 to win amazing prizes.

From now until November 20th, 2018, Women of Steel from USW Local 1944 will be raising funds and gathering items for women living at the Ishtar Women’s Transitional Housing in Langley, BC. They will be accepting donations at the Pub Night as well as at Unit 51 Annual General Meeting (November 13, 2018). A donation box is also available at 4519 Canada Way, in Burnaby.

Women of Steel from USW Local 1944 and the Ishtar Society are looking for women’s comfort items such as pyjamas, housecoats, sweaters, warm jackets, scarves, slippers, children’s clothing (size 5–16), hygiene products, soaps and body wash, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and household items such as pots, pans, full dish or cutlery sets. All items should be new or in gently used condition.

“Fundraising money we collect will go to the Ishtar Society. All donated items will be going to Isabelle’s Boutique, a store where women fleeing from domestic violence situations can go to collect items for free, that help them to start over,” said Elana Felty, from Unit 51.

“Isabelle’s Boutique is part of the Ishtar transition house,” describes Julie. “Some women escape with just the clothes on their back, so they can go in there to get clothing, hygiene products, etc. When they are ready to leave Ishtar, they can go to the store for dishes and other items as well.”

To buy tickets, to arrange donations pick-up within the Lower Mainland, or to get more information, please email Julie Charbonneau (jnjcharb@telus.net) or Elana Felty (elanam_23@hotmail.com).

All our members in BC are encouraged to participate!

In Solidarity,
