Virtual Shop Steward Training is Here!

February 1, 2021 - We are very excited to announce USW Local 1944’s first ever program of cross-country, VIRTUAL Shop Steward Level 1 training, using a brand new, practical curriculum created specifically for Local 1944’s unique needs.

It is a 3-day course, developed between USW Local 1944 and the USW Canadian National Office, and is facilitated by a combination of Local 1944 and USW instructors.

The course is open to all members in good standing who are, or wish to become, shop stewards, or are curious about whether the role of steward would suit them.

Members can register for this course even if they have taken a previous Shop Steward Level 1 course. The Local intends to run these courses until all members who wish to take it have had the opportunity.

The first 3 classes will take place on the following dates: 

March 9–11 (9am to 5pm Pacific Time) THIS CLASS IS NOW FULL

March 16–18 (9am to 5pm Mountain Time) THIS CLASS IS NOW FULL

March 23–25 (9am to 5pm Eastern Time) THIS CLASS IS NOW FULL

These sessions will be held in English and French sessions will be available soon.

Members will need to use a computer or tablet with a functioning camera and microphone. If you do not have this equipment, please include this information when you register. 

Please submit your Union Time Off request to your manager as soon as you register for the course, and follow up with them every couple days until they confirm that Union Time Off is approved. Course Description:

Shop Steward Level 1: This three-day course focuses on the steward’s role as educator and advocate, as well as concentrating on the grievance procedure. The basic core of the course examines the grievance process in its entirety. A comprehensive list of subjects is included in the manual (everything from duty to represent, conflict resolution skills to accommodation issues, etc. are addressed). The information binder has been designed for participants to keep and utilize as a reference manual to assist them with a variety of workplace issues.
