Hello members,

 USW District 3 (Western Canada) is excited to announce that registration has opened for their 2024 District 3 School, a weeklong event taking place at St. Eugene Resort in Cranbrook, B.C., from Sunday, September 15 to Friday, September 20, 2024. The District is proud to hold this event at a beautiful location that is now owned by the Ktunaxa Nation.

 This is an incredible chance to enhance your unionism skills, foster personal growth, and network with like-minded individuals.

 Please find below important details regarding the schedule for 2024:

 Sunday, September 15

• Registration – 1:00 pm – 4:30 pm

• Elder Opening – 6:00 pm

Monday, September 16

• School Opening session – 9:00 am

• Classes begin after opening to 4:30 pm

• Evening session – 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Tuesday, September 17

• Class 9:00 am – 4:30 pm

• Evening session – 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Wednesday, September 18

• Class – 9:00 am – 4:30 pm

• Free Night

Thursday, September 19

• Class – 9:00 am – 4:30 pm

• Banquet – 6:00 pm

Friday, September 20

• Class – 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

• Closing session – 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm

Courses available at the Summer School include:

 Bargaining in a Borderless World: Confronting Globalization and Building Union Power

This course addresses the impacts of globalization on workers and communities, exploring employer and government tactics, union responses in bargaining and politics, and alternative development models rooted in global justice.

Advanced Grievance Handling (Stewards 3)

An advanced course on strategizing final grievance meetings, resolving or advancing cases, and using research to prepare. It covers grievance analysis, duty of fair representation, case law introduction, and research. Prerequisites: Steward 1 and 2.

Occupational Health and Safety

Introduces worker representatives to joint occupational health and safety committees, hazard identification, and control assessment. Covers provincial health and safety laws, Canada Labour Code Part II, workplace inspections, accident investigations, and committee duties.

Leading Bargaining

An advanced course for experienced bargainers focusing on challenging case studies, bargaining techniques, proposal preparation, legal understanding, and strategy sharing among USW members.

Facing Management

Teaches skills for joint labour-management committees and shop steward roles, covering union-management relations, management theories, communication, group dynamics, and conflict resolution, with hands-on practice sessions.

Leadership for Action

Develops leadership and communication skills to build solidarity, focusing on leadership styles, presentation skills, strategic planning, campaign management, mentoring, problem-solving, and conflict resolution.
