Candidate Biographies for the Bargaining Committee Election

Below are the nominees for the Appendix B Craft or Clerical position on the upcoming Telus Bargaining Committee, each accompanied by a brief personal statement. Candidates are listed in alphabetical order.

Melissa El-Roumy

I am pleased to present my nomination for Telus Bargaining Committee.

My life experience has prepared me to become an active member of society and hopefully a USW union representative.

I was born and raised in Montreal in a bilingual family with mixed Lebanese, Egyptian / Greek origins.

My father was a union representative at Quebec Liquor Corporation (SAQ). At diner table, I remember debating about social issues and workforce situations.

This open family dialogue sparked my curiosity and triggered my interests. This is why I obtained my political science bachelor at Université de Montréal.

I have been a TELUS employee for the past 19 years during which I acquired many different skills and completed numerous certifications to sharpen my critical thinking, communication and productivity.

Through the years, I climbed the corporate ladder to become Team Lead so I could help my colleagues and share my knowledge. I have my teammates' wellbeing at heart and I do not hesitate to assist them when requested.

I also received different recognitions such as Customer First Champion and Super Nova awards.

Since 2011, I am the secretary treasurer handling minutes reports, monthly and annual assemblies of my condo syndicate association.

It's been 2 years that I am a proud mother of a wonderful daughter. I work very hard to provide and give her the best possible future. I will teach her to stand for what she believes, voice her opinions and take action in a respectful manner.

Thank you for accepting my nomination.

David Rankin

I have worked at TELUS in Montreal since 2014. For the first 10 years, I was a Loyalty & Retention Specialist; since January 2025, I have been with the Ambassadors team.

I am running because I am passionate about workers’ rights and want to make a difference for our members.

In terms of experience within our union, I am a shop steward, always available to answer members’ questions and help ensure their rights at work are respected.I am involved in different national committees within our Local which, in addition to allowing me to represent our East members, allows me to learn from workplace issues from members across work groups across Canada. In Montreal, I am co-chair of our building’s Health & Safety committee.

In addition to having taken various USW courses, last year I enrolled in a certificate program in Labour Relations, and have taken university-level classes in Industrial Relations, Collective Bargaining, etc. To perfect my knowledge, I have also participated in many courses and workshops offered by Labor Notes.

I am involved in the Montreal Regional Labour Council of the Quebec Federation of Labour (FTQ), which keeps me in the loop with workplace issues across different sectors of our economy, and gives me comparative insights as to what works and what doesn’t in bargaining across different sectors and industries.

I fully understand the level of commitment required, the responsibilities and pressures involved, and I am ready to give it my all to fight for our members.
