Making Sh!t Better Campaign

Hello Members,

The United Steelworkers are dedicated to Making Sh!t Better for all our members. Access to a washroom isn’t just a convenience—it’s a human right. Under the Canada Labour Code and provincial regulations, you have the right to safe, clean, and accessible washrooms.

But we know that’s not always the reality.

  • Employers have closed numerous washrooms.
  • Many facilities are poorly maintained or ignored.
  • Rural technicians often have no access at all during their daily duties.
  • Women of Craft face unique and compounded challenges.

We’re working hard to Make Sh!t Better for workers, and we need your voice to make it happen!

  • Watch this important video from USW District 3 here
  • Take the survey here: It’s still live, and we need your input to help drive real change.
  • Remember: Your employer has a Duty to Provide a Safe Workplace under the law. That includes access to clean washrooms in the workplace.

If you encounter an unsafe or unsanitary workplace, here’s what you can do:

  1. Report the issue immediately to your team lead/manager.
  2. If the issue isn’t fixed use the next step in the Internal Complaint Resolution Process (ICR) .
  3. Reach out to a workplace health and safety committee member or representative for a follow-up and inspection if the problem persists.

Together, we can hold employers accountable and ensure safe and sanitary workplaces for everyone. Let’s Make Sh!t Better!

If you need help identifying your health and safety co-chair or representative or need advice on the ICR process please email us at safety.committee@usw1944.ca
