Additional Virtual Shop Steward Training Dates in April and May

February 16, 2021 - Given the success and the record time with which the February Virtual Shop Steward Level 1 classes filled up, Local 1944 is excited to announce 3 new classes in April and May. We are very pleased with the excitement members have shown for the training, and we thank all of those who already have stepped up to get involved in their Local Union. 

Please note that you can only sign up for one class, and once you have signed up for one class, you can only change this for another class with the approval of the Union.

So by popular demand, here are the dates of the 3 additional classes:

April 13–15 (9:00 am to 5:00 pm Pacific Time) THIS CLASS IS NOW FULL

April 27–29 (9:00 am to 5:00 pm Mountain Time) THIS CLASS IS NOW FULL
Registration deadline March 26

May 4–6 (9:00 am to 5:00 pm Eastern Time) THIS CLASS IS NOW FULL
Registration deadline April 3

February classes filled up within 48 hours so members who wish to attend the training should register rapidly. These April and May sessions will be held in English; the USW is working on making French sessions available soon.

A reminder that the Local intends to run these courses until all members who wish to take it have had the opportunity.

What you should know about the Virtual Shop Steward Level 1 training:

  • The course is open to all members in good standing.
  • Members can register for this course even if they have taken a previous Shop Steward Level 1 course.
  • The training is based on a brand new, practical curriculum created specifically for Local 1944’s unique needs.
  • This 3-day course was developed between USW Local 1944 and the USW Canadian National Office, and is facilitated by a combination of Local 1944 and USW instructors.

Equipment and necessary steps to attend the training:

  • Members will need to use a computer or tablet with a functioning camera and microphone. If you do not have this equipment, please include this information when you register.
  • Submit your Union Time Off request to your manager as soon as you register for the course, and follow up with them every couple days until they confirm that Union Time Off is approved. For our Telus members: Please use the link go/UTO when connected to the Telus intranet to submit your Union Time Off Request (not on company time).

Course description:

Shop Steward Level 1: This three-day course focuses on the steward’s role as educator and advocate, as well as concentrating on the grievance procedure. The basic core of the course examines the grievance process in its entirety. A comprehensive list of subjects is included in the manual (everything from duty to represent, conflict resolution skills to accommodation issues, etc. are addressed). The information binder has been designed for participants to keep and utilize as a reference manual to assist them with a variety of workplace issues.
