As the Executive Board met by Zoom videoconference in mid-October, Board members received Officer and Committee reports and approved the amalgamation of Units 1, 5 and 7 into a new Unit 7. Sister Brooke Downey stepped down from her positions as REO Ontario and Chair of the Civil and Human Rights Committee; the Local Union is thankful for her fierce activism and dedication to the membership.

Acting President Donna Hokiro experienced firsthand the process that members undertake to go to work in the Edmonton Tower at Telus House. She reminds everyone to be careful and stay safe with the season change.

The October issue includes an interview with Regional Executive Officer BC Denise Chisholm, who was on a leave from her job at Telus to take on the temporary position focusing on membership engagement for Local 1944. Ross Brown, Trustee, has taken up her membership outreach activities at the beginning of the month.

This issue also includes some news from our Unit 60 members at Shaw Abbotsford who are currently bargaining with their employer and will not settle for less than a respectful agreement, despite the company’s attempts to undermine the negotiations using the threat of automation. Show your solidarity to Unit 60 members using the hashtag #NoFear on social media.
