This issue features a message from Acting Vice President Pierre-Luc Dick on the challenges, changes and chances ahead. He reminds us that we are responsible for the changes we need in our lives, and that everyone’s involvement will be needed throughout the year to protect not only our wages, but also our rights and our futures.

Meet the USW Local 1944 — Telus Bargaining Committee whose members met earlier this month to prepare for the upcoming round of bargaining with Telus later in the year. Follow the bargaining updates at https://1944.fyi/bu-telus2021 and contact the committee at bargaining.committee@usw1944.ca. Show your support on social media using the hashtags #RiseUp and #usw1944.

Members from Unit 60 Shaw Abbotsford are still without a collective agreement, as their employer declared an impasse at the bargaining table in December. The bargaining team met with the conciliator in mid-January, and visited members in their compound in Abbotsford, BC, to inform them of the company’s insulting last offer.

With Black History Month around the corner, roll up your sleeves and be ready to take action! A lot can be done at the individual level, and you will find a few ideas on page 4. Black History Month is a yearly reminder that these actions need to be carried out throughout the year, not only during the month of February.
