Concerns for the safety of our members from Unit 501 in the Barrie Call Centre

March 7, 2019 - This morning, USW Local 1944 was advised that a water main froze, currently rendering the water system inoperable at Telus’ Barrie Call Centre (Ontario). Members from Unit 501 were sent home last night.

The Company has informed us that washroom trailers are being brought in for our members use (as required under Canada Occupational Health and Safety Regulations subsections 9.14 to 9.17). Also, bottled water is available on site, and coffee, tea will be made available throughout the day for our members.

The Company’s safety board has scheduled a meeting today to review the situation.

Local 1944 has notified the Company about our concerns regarding the safety of our members in the Barrie Call Centre, especially around what we understand to be the current interruption of the fire suppression (sprinkler) system.

Our Local is maintaining a close eye on the issue and is in constant contact with the Company.

Please remember that if you feel that your safety is at risk, you have the right to reach out to your manager and express your concerns. If you still feel that you are in any form of danger, please contact your Local Union Representative immediately.

In Solidarity,

USW Local 1944
