NDP Leadership Race 2017

July 26, 2017 - USW Local 1944 is excited for the upcoming NDP leadership race.

Our members will be part of selecting a new leader, hearing the ideas and proposals from the candidates and sharing in the energy of the race as new members join the party to take part.

The race to select the next leader of the federal NDP kicked off in March and the leader will be chosen this fall through multiple rounds of balloting until a candidate has received the support of 50% +1 member.  There will be a maximum of 5 rounds of voting. The first round of voting opens September 18th and rounds will continue through October as required.

The four candidates remaining in the race are Charlie AngusNiki AshtonGuy Caron and Jagmeet Singh.  Pat Stogran and Peter Julian have withdrawn.

Debates have been taking place across the country. There are three remaining debates: August 2 in VictoriaAugust 27 in Montreal and September 10 in Vancouver.

Members are encouraged to mark their calendars for the USW live telephone town hall with the NDP leadership candidate’s tonight, Wednesday, July 26. You can call in directly. Here’s how: on Wednesday, July 26 between 7:00 pm and 8:00 pm Eastern for Steelworkers in District 6 and between 6:00 pm and 7:00 pm Pacific, for Steelworkers in District 3, dial 1-877-229-8493 and enter the ID code 113332.

The USW previously hosted a labour-focused debate in Toronto on June 22.
