Update regarding the Election Tellers report
Posted 2018-May-24

The USW Local 1944 Executive Board met again on Friday, May 18th, 2018, to continue debate on the Election Tellers report.

This date was in addition to the meetings held on Monday, May 14th and Tuesday, May 15th. John Perquin, the Assistant to the USW International Secretary-Treasurer, was assigned by the International to assist with deliberations and to ensure proper USW process is being followed at the meeting. Prior to conducting a vote on the final Tellers report, any protests that have been properly filed must be read, debated and voted on by the Executive Board at the meeting.

Due to the sheer volume of complaints received from members during the 2018 Local Union election, the Executive Board was unable to complete the required process as outlined by the USW Local Union Elections Manual during this sitting. Additional dates have been scheduled for June 18, 19, 20 as per a motion voted on by the Executive Board.

We know there is confusion around the process and refer members to the USW Local Union Elections Manual. This is the first time our Local has participated in the USW one member, one vote elections. When we voted to join the Steelworkers, we voted to adopt the processes of the USW Local Union elections. The process is being followed as outlined by the USW, regardless of opinion of the process. In addition, all USW Locals are going through Local Union Elections and must adhere to the same process; we are not in a unique situation.

Thank you for your patience as we work through this process together.

In solidarity,

USW Local 1944
