Coming up soon - Mediation meeting in Toronto
You have received an email from Walker Peters recently about the mediation session that will be held on September 14 in Toronto with the federal labour board mediator.
Mr. Peters’ email said that the union ‘requested to meet’ and that the goal of the meeting is for the company to hear why employees rejected Freedom's offer.
That is not really the full story.
First, it is pretty clear why the offer was rejected - it just wasn’t good enough in respect of wages, vacation rights and respect for your length of service/seniority.
Your union did not ‘request to meet’ Freedom Mobile. Instead, when the ballots were counted we simply advised Freedom Mobile that we were ready to meet anytime and anywhere with the intent of resolving differences. The ball was and is in Freedom Mobile’s court.
The main goal of any mediation is to make progress toward solving differences and toward arriving at a settlement. In other words, bargaining.
We'll be showing up on September 14th to bargain in good faith and we expect the same from the company.
In the meantime, keep strong and know that tens of thousands of USW members across Canada are behind you. Many have called their local Freedom store to express that support. And since we got such good feedback from the public in Toronto when we leafleted a few stores there, we will be selecting another city to do the same very soon.
