Freedom Mobile Bargaining Update #13
Posted 2017-Aug-15

Membership Update

  • Right after last week’s vote, when a solid majority of members voted to turn down Freedom’s latest offer, our Union immediately contacted the company’s chief negotiator.

  • We informed him that we were ready and willing to return to the bargaining table anytime, anywhere. We told him that we are confident that the parties can arrive at a mutually acceptable first collective agreement here in Windsor.

  • At the same time, we contacted the federal labour board’s conciliation officer (now in the role of mediator) to inform him of the same thing.

  • The mediation officer then emailed the Union and Freedom saying he would be contacting the parties in the next few days.

  •  We think that the assistance of the mediation officer can continue to be helpful in arriving at a revised settlement for members to consider and vote on.

Support from other USW members:

USW members in other cities are showing their support for us. They’ve made dozens and dozens of calls to Freedom Mobile retail stores with the message that it is time for the company’s bargaining committee to get back to the table. In most cases the store managers promise to pass on our information to senior Freedom management. USW members and their families will keep this going in the coming days.

Yesterday in Toronto, an exuberant crew of sons and daughters of USW members handed out over 600 flyers to members of the public at two prominent Freedom retail outlets in Toronto. The flyers call on Freedom to get back to bargaining toward a contract that better recognizes the hard work and commitment of the employees here in Windsor (and they also encourage people to become Freedom subscribers!).

Feedback from members of the public was excellent. Now USW members in other cities are asking to do the same at Freedom stores in their towns. We’ll soon be organizing the same thing here in Windsor and we’ll be reaching out for your help.

In solidarity,

Bryan Adamczyk (USW Staff Rep), Jenn Bucholtz, John Hockley (USW National Local Union 1944 Reps), Jasen Gannon, Christian Poisson, Tanya Travis Dunn (elected committee members)
